The USA’s first-ever appearance in the Bundesliga came to an abrupt end when it suffered a shock defeat to a strong Germany side.
The Red Devils were able to extend their unbeaten run to six matches after taking the lead with two minutes to go, but they were unable to pull the plug on the match as they fell 2-0 behind to Bayern Munich.
A late header from David Villa saw the home side take the lead before the break, but the hosts took the lead again with a fine counter-attack to seal the victory.
With a 4-0 aggregate advantage in the match, Bayern were able the equaliser and extend their undefeated run to eight games, having also won four of their past five matches.
USA forward Chris Wondolowski was also impressive in his debut for the US national team, netting his first international goal, while Jordan Morris netted the only goal of the match for the Americans.
Germany boss Thomas Tuchel said his side were “not the team of last season” and will be “playing with a lot of heart”.
The result means that the Americans will now play in the second leg of their group stage on March 4 against France.
