The US Women’s National Team and the USA are both looking to avenge their historic 2015 gold medal loss to the Japan and Australia in the final of the Women’s World Cup in Houston.
The two nations will meet in the quarterfinals of the World Cup on Sunday (NZ time) at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.USWNT coach Jill Ellis and the US Women have both said that their side will be prepared for the pressure of facing Japan and the Australia in a semi-final.
The USA defeated Japan 4-0 in the first match of the group stage.
However, Ellis has admitted that she will have to be more flexible when facing Japan.
“We know that we are going to be facing a team that we know is good,” Ellis said.
“If we don’t have the best players, we are not going to win every game and I think it’s going to take some courage to say, ‘Okay, let’s do it again.'”
The USA have a number of injuries and suspensions, including defender Abby Wambach and midfielder Alex Morgan, but they have shown a solid performance in the World Cups.
They were beaten 4-2 by Japan in the semifinals, and they were thrashed 5-0 by Australia in their first match.
The final will be held on Sunday.
