A move to make the US Men’s National Team the official World Cup team could mark the end of the sport’s dominance.
The United States Soccer Federation is expected to announce on Monday that it will become the official team for the tournament.
The announcement comes as FIFA is trying to convince the world’s football governing body to allow teams from South America, the Caribbean and Africa to compete for the 2026 World Cup in the same way as the US.
The World Cup will be held in Russia in 2022.
The US is expected on Sunday to announce that it is in negotiations with FIFA to become the first country to host the 2028 tournament.
FIFA says it has been in talks with the Football Association of Ireland, which has been awarded the rights to host a World Cup, about the possibility of allowing teams from those countries to play for the host nation.
